Which Way Western Man?

The Sign of Jonah

Synopsis: Chapter 4 returns to the big themes of Jonah, the reluctant but successful prophet. Jonah knows he is being sent to Nineveh because of God’s promise in Deut. 32:21 and his mission is to activate Assyria against Israel as God’s judgement for the Northern Kingdom’s sins. Jonah’s loyalty to his own people, and his own word, is greater than his loyalty to God’s people and God’s word. So, Jonah becomes the accuser, aligning himself with Satan against God. Jonah’s only hope is Israel’s only hope; self-humiliation and repentance in imitation of the Ninevite’s self-humiliation and repentance.
