Luke: Jesus Gives us Hope (Luke 4:38-44)

Sermon Overview:
Luke 4:38-44
Jesus is the Lord over sickness, as much as he is the Lord over demons. Every aspect of the curse Jesus demonstrates that he is the one who has come to set the captives free. As is our common experience, we all suffer the effects of sickness, disease and death, and we all long to be free from it, yet, Jesus demonstrates that he is the only one who can free us. However, sickness, disease and death that riddle our bodies is still a constant reality until the resurrection, but in the meantime... Jesus will use it for our good.

Sermon Outline:
1. Jesus has power over sickness (v.38-39)
2. Jesus has power over the curse (v.40-41a, 42)

Questions for further discussion:
1. What are some of the worst ways you have suffered from sickness of disease? Did you ever wonder why God didn’t deliver you from it?
2. What do Jesus’ actions say about him, and what does that mean for us?
3. How have your sufferings in the past been used to grow you and change you? Are you thankful for them now that they have passed for what they did for you?
4. What do you think life without sin, death, demons, disease, sickness, weeds and thistles would be like? Is that your hope on a daily basis? Why or why not?
